Two action novels which celebrate the power of the individual

When it comes to many action novels, it is very often one man or woman against an entire system. The odds are always stacked against them, but they always seem to find a way to get the job done. Here are two such novels.

The Rescue by Steven Konkoly

Ryan Decker as once highly-skilled CIA operative. Now he’s a gun for hire, taking jobs to pay the bills and taste the thrills. His speciality is retrieving victims of abductions. His takes a job to rescue the daughter of a power US senator. But what to him seems like a straightforward mission turns catastrophically wrong. The daughter is killed, his team eliminated and his own wife and son executed by the Russian mafia. Decker is convinced he was set up but is jailed for his part it all.

A decade on, though, someone needs his help again but when he is mysteriously released from prison, Decker is sceptical. A shadowy figure has information that the botched raid was a set-up and Decker is eager for revenge and is determined to take down those who ruined his life.

Wild Card by Stuart Woods

In the latest in the Stone Barrington series of novels, Stone finds his peaceful existence disturbed by an enemy. However, the former police detective, turned private investigator and all-round fixer has enough experience to know how to deal with him.

But it turns out this is just the beginning. The attacks keep coming and the plans get more sophisticated and suddenly Stone finds himself in a high-stakes game against a powerful adversary in which the whole fate of the country is in jeopardy.
