Audiobooks: What to look out for

There are more and more ways to enjoy books these days and the humble printed copy is facing a challenge from all angles in the form eBooks and audiobooks. There will still, however, be demand for the good old printed work, but audiobooks are rapidly increasing in popularity as they fit neatly around people’s busy and varied lives.

There are many advantages to an audiobook. One is that they can allow you to go about your daily life while entertaining you with a gripping story or dispensing fascinating facts. You can listen to an audiobook while doing housework, at the gym, on your daily commute or on a long drive. They can also be enjoyed by more than one person at a time and even help younger children develop their reading skills by following the printed version alongside the audio one.

If you are new to audiobooks, here are some things to look out for.

Who is the narrator?

Check who is reading the book which you are going to allow into your ears. If it is a well-known actor or an experienced narrator, you’ll know you are in good hands. A poor narrator can really spoil your enjoyment of a book, no matter how good the storyline so make sure you know who is doing the reading.

Is it an unabridged version of the book?

An unabridged audiobook means you are getting the full text of the original publication. Some audiobooks can edit the original text so you don’t always get what is in the original printed version.
